I want to give my sincere thanks to Gwen from http://therobertsonkubbernessconnection.blogspot.com/2011/01/follow-friday_24.html for featuring this blog and introducing me to a great bunch of fellow old-photo appreciators! I don't promote my blog and kind of assumed there weren't that many others like me out there because I don't know any in real life! It was wonderful to "meet" so many and, being a little unschooled in blog-sharing, I will admit I was a more than a bit flustered at the blog's subscriber count suddenly rising! :) Thank you so much, Gwen!

And "Thank you!" to all of you who subscribed, and to those who left comments. I set comments for moderation so that I don't miss any, but that means that sometimes one takes a few days to go through. I do like to reply to them, so please check back soon if you left a comment recently.

In the past few months I went on an Ebay buying spree and spent much more than I should have really. It will take some time to put all the pictures up here, what with trying to write any sellers about where they got photos that have names on them, scanning, editing, organizing, and posting. I am a bit ADDish and go in fits and starts.

I do hope to be much better about posting more regularly now that I'm not buying any more for a while.

Here is one of my new old photos. It was taken in Flint, Michigan, by, I think, Will H. Foote. It was interesting deciphering the capital letters on that one, but I'm pretty sure I got them right.

It is always a huge bonus to me when the people are identified. Below is a scan of the back of the photo, with first and middle names or initials. Unfortunately not their surname! First is a sideways version so you can see the placement as it is probably written like that due to where the people are in the photo. I believe the names refer to just the children . It would be better if the parents and surname were named too, but just maybe there will be someone out there searching for the first names of a bunch of siblings!

This could be a misspelled Elmer but you never know. Also, the initial could be an H but using my super-sharp detective skills from deciphering the letters on the front, it is constructed unlike the H there and exactly like the first letter.

(P.S. I found 2 charts here: http://www.moonzstuff.com/articles/oldhandwriting.html, with examples according to which the initial could be W or H, so for the sake of 'googlers' I'll write the alternate names: Elner H, Elmer H, Elmer W)

Two beautiful "found photos"

I first saw these photos on a blog called Celestial Charms. When I asked permission to post them here the owner kindly said I could post any photo from her Flickr photostream! Thank you so much, Maureen!

I'll start with the the two photos that I found at her blog post, Thoughts on Victorian Fashion.

First is a lovely photo of five little brothers from Canajoharie, New York.

Next is one of the same five boys with their two sisters and their parents as well. They look like a pretty well-to-do family, and with all those boys there must have been a fair bit of mischief going on. And with the girls, even more. I can say this as my family is almost exactly the same in make-up, though spread out in age more than this one.

Gerk family---ancestors of a local family

A man in our town (who has a number of the same Facebook "friends" as I have) posted this picture as his profile, and as soon as I saw it I asked permission to share it here. He was very happy to let me post it along with the family's names and story. Thank you, Ted!

Jacob, Maria, Paul, Anna, and at least two others who aren't in the photo are the children of Anna Margareta. I am waiting to hear whether Johannes/John is a child or grandchild, though with his hand on Kristina's lap and not Anna Margareta's, I presume he is a grandchild. Margareta, Kristina, and Michael are daughters-in-law and son-in-law.   Anna Margareta's husband, Ted's great-grandfather, is not in the photo as he refused to be in any photos.

The photo was taken 1915-17 in Russia, just before the Russian revolution, in the Volga German village of Josefstal. Ted's grandfather, Paul at back right, was 15.   Paul and his sister-in-law, Margareta Gerk, were the only ones in the picture to make it out of Russia. Paul escaped in 1924.   Margareta was married to his brother Michael Gerk (not in photo). They also both came to Canada, with Michael Gerk dying on the way of typhoid. Margareta settled in Saskatchewan and died around 1930 or so. Michael Kisser was taken by the KGB in the 1930's and was probably shot.   The rest of the family were all put into labour camps in Siberia in 1941. Some perished in the labour camps, and some survived.

This photo was sent to Ted's grandfather Paul after he had escaped to Canada.

The little boy in front, John Gerk, came from Russia to Canada to visit family members in 1989. Perhaps he'd been waiting all that time for the Berlin wall and its associated Iron Curtain to come down. I can imagine he was overjoyed this had finally happened and immediately jumped at the chance!

I love this picture of a family with great big smiles! I wonder whether this is their farm and their horse, or maybe they were city folk who wanted their family picture done on the farm. I tend to believe the former because a picture on a dude ranch or friend's ranch would probably be with more obviously western clothing accessories and background. Forget the polo shirt! I bought the picture on Ebay and have no information on the family or where this was found or taken. Of course, if anyone recognizes them, please let me know! I'm not familiar with the trees in the background. Perhaps someone can tell me what they are and they will be a clue to the location.

"New" old photos from Wausau, Michigan

I recently bought a box of photos from an Ebay seller who told me that they were reproduced at the Toburen photo studio at Wausau, Wisconsin mostly during the 1960s to 1980s.

Families in the 60s to 80s took their old family photos to the studio to be reproduced, and then never came back to pick them up! I can't imagine that the studio didn't call to remind them, so I don't know why so many were never claimed! There are some great images, I'm thinking particularly of one of an older couple from possibly the 1800s where the wife is smoking a pipe! This wasn't a snapshot, but a posed photo from a studio, so the pipe must have been an object very near and dear to her! Anyway, I will start posting some of the large family photos from this lot. None of them have names, but some have order numbers. Eventually I would like to find a way to find their modern families. If anyone has an "in" with newspapers or local websites of Wausau who think this would be a good thing to post, please let me know!

I purchased this photo on Ebay recently. On the back it says "Endlich family". Unfortunately, not one smile in the bunch! Those little girls sure look alike! Perhaps a couple of them are twins? I just LOVE this! Through Google, I found a business who sells video clips to advertisers etc for big money, but you can see short previews. Here is a 70-second clip of the Peerbolte family.

Make sure you see the part where they get out of their "18-seater limousine" which would be a regular-sized car now, only it fits all 18 as no doubt they didn't have the seating regulations we have now. It looks like an optical illusion to see them all file out of it one by one!

Nitsche family with 8 of 15 children

I noted that three of the 15 children died in infancy, and two of them were in the first eight born to this family. So the photo would really be of the oldest eight children rather than the first eight.

The other baby who died was a twin; his surviving twin lived until early adulthood. All the others married.

Having lost a baby boy at birth myself, I can really sympathize with the heartbreak of these losses, though I know my experience of it would have been very different in many other ways.

The person who contributed the photo writes:
"This is one of the last get togethers of the Arville and Mary Gilliam Family in Kentucky. Arville, laid-off school teacher, has taken a war industry job in Dayton, Ohio and has been commuting with his family on desolate Brushy Creek. In March 1943, mom and five children packed everything we owned and rode the train to Cincinnatti and on to our new home in Dayton Ohio - where we lived above and behind an abandoned barber shop..."

Here, youngest to oldest, are the children of Julius and Emma Henrichsen taken at the 1970 reunion held at Sunset Park, Rosenberg, TX. One very interesting thing about this family is how many different spellings of the surname there are. One or two could be take as typographical errors, but it sounds like three of the brothers "Anglicized" their names to Hendricks or Hendrickson. These people aren't named so we have to guess. Nowadays we might assume, due to their older appearance, that these are grandparents with their grandchildren, and that may be the most likely scenario, however people often had children later in life, and also didn't always have (or choose to use) the "benefit" of hair dyes and youthful hair styles or makeup styles ( or surgery?)

This is the back of the photo above it. My German friend translates it as "June 1929; Kinderfest" (children's party)

These photos were quite the find for me! They are all purchased from an Ebay seller in Great Britain. None of them have names on them.

This is a photo postcard made somewhere in Europe. The print on the back is primarily English, but also French and German. There is no handwriting.

This one is possibly from France. ("carte postale" on back) No handwriting.

I don't know for sure whether this is one family, but there is such a family resemblance among many of these girls and young women that I wanted to include it.

This is an Azo photo postcard; I don't know if that means it's from any particular country. I am guessing North America though due to the wooden house behind.

This picture was taken at the Palace Grounds, Honolulu, Hawaii, on July 5, 1932. They are named on the back in an interesting manner. You have to hold the photo up to the light, and lines are drawn from the names to the silhouettes. So, seated behind is the father, Clyde Osborne; in front from left to right (as viewed from the front of the photo) are Beverly, Robert, Evelyn, Junior (must also be Clyde, then) and Lorraine.

These lovely children are all prepared for some party or holiday. A couple of girls are displaying little bell garlands.

The back of the photo says "Blanche, Dorothy." It's likely that they are the names of two of the children, but they could also have been to whom the photo was meant to be sent (it's in postcard format.) Photo taken by Thirlwell, Photographers,who had offices in Stockton, Middlesboro, West Hartlepool, Newcastle, Darlington, & Bishop Auckland, so this family could have been from any of those places.

Upon reading a little further, I came up with these interesting points about this Dutch family.
There were 19 children; two were born after this photo.
Their given names were actually much more "interesting" than the ones under the photo. They are very Latin sounding.
There were 60 grandchildren, from 9 of the children in the photo.
Of the other 10 children in this family...
3 died as babies (3rd, 11th, and 18th children)
4 took holy orders (7th, 9th, 12th, and 19th children)
3 were otherwise unmarried (8th, 10th, and 17th children).

I have been doing some shopping, and over the next few weeks I should have lots and lots of photos to add.

Here is a lovely photo of a large wooden house with a family in front, taken January 18th, 1911. There are seven younger children and four adults. I don't know if they are two families or one with relatives, workers, or visitors. I think the children are all one family because of how and where they are sitting and standing, but that's just my opinion.

It was a photo postcard sent from Miss Evangeline Huling to Miss Carrie B. Fox. So my guess is this is the Huling family. Here is a closeup of the people. Click to see it nice and HUGE!

If I've calculated correctly, the oldest child was born when his mother was 16 yrs 9 mos, and the youngest when she was almost 43, making them more over 26 years apart in age.

This picture was sent to the LOGAN family in Saskatchewan. This could be a picture of the HOGG or LOGAN family, taken in Ontario during the late 1800s or early 1900s. Even if all the apparent couples (all those in the back plus the man seated right) are taken to include an in-law, there are eight children in the family.

**Anonymous writes: These are my grandparents and most of their children. My father is the baby in his mother's arms. This is a blended family. This is a 3rd marriage for each spouse. The Stoutenberg girls are Hannah's children from her first marriage. One child is missing for Hannah and one for D.C. from their 2nd marriages. The four youngest children are from this marriage. Hannah died later in the year and DC married for a 4th time. Addie Hale is a cousin to the Stoutenberg girls.

Possibly Ida Smith (b. abt 1862, Fayette Co., TN) and her husband and children. Her husband may be a Mr. Thompson (Tomsen?). The photo was probably made in the 1890's. The photographer's stamp says Chickasha, Indian Territory. The present day town of Chickasha, OK, is in Grady Co., southwest of Oklahoma City. The photograph was saved by Ida's first cousin, Maggie Hall Smith, also of Fayette County, TN.
